F & M Family Eyecare Provides Treatment

of Eye Diseases

Your regular visits to your optometrist help to ensure good vision for your daily activities and can help to detect eye diseases in the early stages, when they are more easily treated.

.

At F & M Family Eyecare in Riverdale, GA, we help our patients manage common eye diseases that can occur.

Conjunctivitis ("Pink Eye")

Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection that is easily transmitted from one person to another. It is caused by bacteria, viruses or sometimes, due to allergies. Symptoms include redness of the eyes, itchiness, discharge from the eyes or a gritty feeling in the eyes. Your eye doctor can help with medications to eliminate the infection.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eyes that gradually begins to interfere with normal vision. Cataracts generally develop with aging, as everyday exposure to UV rays from the sun causes damage to the eye tissues. Your optometrist can detect the development of cataracts during your eye exams and can monitor the problem, which may require surgery to restore clear vision.

Glaucoma

Another disease of eyes that occurs with aging is glaucoma. Glaucoma is a problem of pressure within the eyes and the inability to drain fluids sufficiently. These issues can lead to loss of vision. Your eye doctor will measure the pressure in your eyes and will monitor the progress of the disease to ensure preservation of vision.

Macular Degeneration

In macular degeneration, the light-sensitive cells in the macula, the central portion of the retina, begin to wear down. Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive condition that causes gradual loss of vision. Individuals may experience blurry vision or dark spots in their field of vision. Your optometrist can detect signs of AMD during your eye exams and can help you manage the condition to preserve your vision.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes are often advised to see their eye doctors more frequently. Diabetes can cause damage to the fragile blood vessels in the eyes, which can lead to loss of vision. Your eye doctor will carefully evaluate your eye health and determine if you require further treatment for any problems caused by high blood sugar levels.
